He studied dozens of businesses throughout his career and after losing an election, a volunteer who worked in one of his offices dropped off some copies of information about Excel and left the message 'Give this to Senator Rose, it will help him pay off his campaign debts.' Steve Smith... Aside from owning planes and helicopters bought an entire town, Las Jitas, Texas. Both have since retired from actively being involved with Excel. Joe & Connie Mitchell, Founder and CEO of VarTec/Excel:
Joe and Connie Mitchell started Vartec, also based in Dallas, Texas, at their kitchen table in 1988. They built a billion dollar company with a direct mail marketing approach. When Excel came up for sale in 2001 they jumped at it. They had watched Kenny and Steve build Excel at the same time they were building VarTec.
